Seems strange that it would explode like that when not in use, but I think the Wii Remote does drain batteries even when it is turned off. I got one back at launch and after I stopped using it on a regular basis I'd find the batteries would die rather quickly so now I always remove the batteries after I'm done playing.

You are correct. The bundle was only released for Wii and Xbox 360.
