Forget chickens. Do the hoatzin. Claws on wings (when young; also can be regrown as an adult), gut like a cow, red eyes, dinosaurian wings, feathers, and crest...and they sound prehistoric, too.

It's useful for the evolution of a specific characteristic. Otherwise I agree, I think quite a lot of the misconceptions about evolution stem from applying a concept that was developed pre-Origin of Species to evolution (that of a species).
A couple of comments:
China has a huge and important culture..and part of that culture is learning through copying is a good thing. Tbh every other human does it that way, we simply try to hide it better. I would be careful to write off China so easily..They will most probably dominate your future too.
