I just wanna say the Bechdel Test to me comes off as extremely flawed. While Davies’ run may have passed it more often, they only did it thanks primarily to Rose, Martha, and Donna talking to their mothers a lot. However, Rose and Martha wound up being rather shallow characters madly in love with the Doctor. Hell,

I agree very much. Donna had the kind of relationship with the Doctor I wish Martha had had. Otherwise, Martha was far superior, smart, capable and hard-working (obviously) compared to loud, annoying Donna (who still constantly got told how brilliant she was). On the other hand, maybe they (felt they) needed Martha's

Seriously. Martha started out rocky, in part because they didn't know what the character could be and in part because our expectations left over from Rose. But by the Human Nature/Family of Blood two-parter where Martha had to do the heavy lifting, that's where she began to shine on her own. I was really sad to see

Freema Agyeman's Martha is undoubtedly the most underrated of the modern Who companions. The unrequited crush thing was a little sketchy, but beyond that, she was solid... and if they could have wrapped up that part of her arc and had her stick around anyway, I'd have really enjoyed that.
