Wrong. I can review a car based on how it performs against other cars, not only other, prior versions of itself. If I drive a Chevy Cruze, am I not allowed to review it because I never drove a Chevy Cavalier? Can I not compare it to the Ford Focus I drove last week?

Yes, you totally need to know about engines from 20 years ago before you can review a new car. A review that makes no comparisons whatsoever to previous versions of said car, where more knowledge of the history of said car would come in handy.
