Eh, I distinctly remember slumping over in despair 30 seconds after Jar Jars appearance. Walking out of the theater, my friends and I had the unanimous reaction of "It was ok, I guess." Yes, it got worse in hindsight, but I think some people are overestimating how many people liked it even initially.
