I don’t know if other states have this, but in Minnesota employers have to pay overtime even for salaried employees (Unless you make over a certain amount of which I am not sure, but I think it is pretty high).

Part of the reason that Valve had to buy the right for DOTA is that Blizzard’s creator tool had ToS that stated that they had the rights for any custom stuff made for Warcraft 3. So getting the rights would depend on Garry’s Mod ToS and also if they wanted to use the same name as it has in Garry’s Mod.
