@colorisnteverything: Thank you!!! :)
I just passed my doctoral prelims three days ago and now I'm going to go paint my fingernails.
I'm not a ra-ra fan of either of these women, however, I was horrified by Kate Gosselin's behaviour, even out in a situation that she was not comfortable in, she was better equipped than any Girl Scout troop has ever been in the woods and her treatment of her hostess was just appalling.
That Koala just found-out that he's going to be one of Oprah's Favorite Things.
When the Taliban's number one export after heroin was women, where was the U.S. then? All U.S. women care about is the burqa and of course, none of the women pontificating on the "plight of Afghan women" know anything about Afghan history, let alone the social history of Afghan women. Yes, let's continue to perpetuate…
This reminds me of Eva Perón. Love her or hate her, when you read about her or see pictures of her when her cancer started to finally break her down, you can still appreciate how lovely she was and what a tremendous presence she was... despite her dipstick of a husband.
Ugh. So we can say two things about Darling: (1) that he's just a famewhore who knew this would happen or (2) that he truly was not thinking of the implications of inviting a Christian (?) Mission group to *host* his coat drive. Is it possibly an issue of semantics? I want to hope so, but it's hard.
When I was being treated for bulimia, my shrink was $70/week just to check my meds; my therapist was limited to six months (maybe?) and was $65 or something every other week; and then the cost of repairing (read: replacing) my top teeth was a little over $10K. And let's not forget to factor in all of the other earlier…
Sometimes I wish I had the sense of self-worth that these celebs have, even if it's GROSSLY misplaced. I'm in awe that you could think that much of yourself and that other people think that much of you, too, that you can't relinquish control of your BlackBerry for a short flight. I don't even know where my BlackBerry…
@Uhuh.: AMAZING. Thank you! I had a classmate who was almost in a plane crash in grad school and while the plane was careening downward, the flight attendant broke her leg after getting slammed with the drink cart. The interiors of planes are made for freak accidents.
Julia Roberts looks phenomenal and so does Kira Sedgwick. They're both such unconventional beauties (which I realise takes a small army to create/maintain, but still...) and love Julia's hair! Oh how I aspire to have such lovely long hair!
@timetorambleon: I don't either. I'm glad to see women of my generation doing great things. I'm much more likely to start to feel inadequate when I'm constantly besieged by engagement announcements, wedding announcements, baby announcements, housewarmings, etc. because wider society is telling me I've failed at…
I'm not surprised there are nasty comments in this thread. There's a lot of venom that gets spewed behind closed doors in a PhD program, let alone amongst other professors. This is why I have to laugh at the sorority-haters. Here, we've gotten past the undergraduate sorority tropes and all that drama, shifted to…
No one ever made fun of me until I was in 6th grade. The boys made-up a song during 4-Square to the tune of that song on Full House "Ranger Joe" only this was "Ranger Moo." Then it progressed to just calling me a "fat f**king lard." I was 5'7" and about 140 lbs. I'm 29 years-old right now, I'm still between 5'7"-5'8"…
Isn't this sort of riding the "Mad Men"/Michelle Obama-effect of dressing in well-tailored, classic clothes that our mothers always told us were part of "investment dressing"? Kate Middleton is the embodiment of that for a younger generation. It's nice to see classy, well-groomed, smart women and well-tailored pieces…
@timetorambleon: Thank you!!! This makes me feel SO much better and that's it's not me, it's them. I've come to understand that finals exacerbates this trend. The boy I like is also into intellectual property law, which although I'm sure is riveting stuff, just gives him more reasons never to have to actually interact…
@infundibulum: I mean, I had bulimia for a decade and in recovery, I can eat anything, but there are some things that I know I just *can't* eat because they're trigger foods, but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying something else on the menu.
I stopped going-out to dinner with one of my colleagues because wherever we went had to serve hamburgers or we couldn't go there. No Thai, no Indian, no Italian, no Mexican, it had to be somewhere that would serve a hamburger. I finally couldn't take it any more because I couldn't deal with a 30+ year-old woman who…
I just recently hosted a post-Thanksgiving event using a Facebook group to send invitations which I would normally never do (normally, if I wasn't about to take my prelims, I'd hand write everyone's invitation and call it "Art Therapy" but I digress...). Facebook and e-mail are one of the myriad of reasons why people…
