I’ve seen Echo’s running near or beyond 500k miles with little maintanence, they are basically unkillable little cars. And the fact that everything is so simple makes them easy to work on and spare parts are reasonably priced too.

Because in Brazil (where it was designed) it’s Echo-Sport.
The EcoSport was always a Brazilian product, it has no European influence whatsoever, that explains the poor reviews that it got in Europe as its a product for South America.

Or... It could be a remake of their Felicia pick up, which was sold way before the mk4 Jetta:
My mom’s old Hyundai Matrix had storage under the rear seats which you had to fold and flip up to access, I don’t think many owners knew about them.
Well, the EcoSport is a South American product, not European, so they will have to make it better for it to sell in the NA market, as it has been bashed for the European media for having a low quality interior compared to the Fiesta.
You are correct, engines are the 1.0 turbo and 1.6 from the Fiesta but also an optional 2.0 (142 hp) awd with either a manual or a powershift automatic.
The current gen EcoSport has been on sale since 2012, so the US will get the facelifted version with probably an Escape looking front end.
I hope that they change the back door to a liftgate as it’s the opposite of practical:
