Given that Obama has been deporting illegal aliens at record numbers, I’d have thought your abuelita would’ve been terrified way before this? I know a couple of people who are present in this country illegally, fear of being caught and deported is pretty much a way of life for them, it seems - as it would for anyone

I am a millennial woman, immigrant from India and I agree with your mother. I also speak four languages. If you live in America, you need to speak English. (Speak your other languages as well, of course).

I feel the EXACT same way as your father (down to the default menu) even though I am a 29 year old first generation immigrant from India who speaks 4 languages. Naturalized three years ago. Mostly because when I am on the phone and I hear “Press 1 for English” my first annoyed thought is: “Did I or did I not spend all

I actually liked his post because it felt honest. The fact of the matter is most people don’t care on any significant level. I admire the true-blue bleeding heart liberals but most people in this world are just trying to go about their own day. Heck, I am a minority and I didn’t care about Mike Brown. And I am not

Exactly. Food on the table, job security, safety of one’s family is generally placed at a higher premium than some nebulous idea of “oppression” happening elsewhere. It’s sad but true. People have one vote. They’re fit to use it in their self-interest while others may choose to exercise it in the collective good.

Thank you for an honest post. I feel the exact same way - and I say this as a WoC and an immigrant. Accusing all Trump voters of being racist/sexist etc. is akin to saying all Muslims are members of Al-Qaida. Which is patently inaccurate and untrue.

This. I know plenty of legal Latinos who did so as well. And some Muslims as well - shocker, I know. And a dozen other first-generation legal immigrants (I am one, too, incidentally) who voted for Trump. Heck, I know Obama voters from 2008 who voted for Trump on 11/8. Again, they’re not loud and proud about it because

How do you reconcile that with the numbers that show Trump got more Latino, Asian-American and Black votes than Mitt Romney did?

Thank you for stating yourself so articulately. I too once brought into this myth of “empowered and liberated” hijabi till I worked at an Islamic private school for four years and witnessed a father insisting that his ONE FUCKING YEAR OLD DAUGHTER wear a hijab and cover herself in the swimming pool BECAUSE THERE WERE

No, it’s not fake. These people enter legally, that is, on a student or a tourist visa and when it expires they just never leave. This is called visa overstay. There is actually no term for illegal immigrants, per se - border hoppers are referred to as EWI (entry without inspection) - there is no path to legal status

Thank you for saying this because I actually feel like I am going insane. People seem to forget that Obama deported a record number of illegal immigrants while in office. Immigration laws stay on the books despite who the President is. And while I have some sympathy for those who are present illegally in this country,

I’ve been saying this since Obama has been deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants. The only difference is he was quiet about it and because it was Obama, he got a free pass for it. There’s rules and procedures about this in place and we already have a “deportation force” aka ICE. Whose job it is to deport

We already have a deportation force. They’re called ICE. Obama has been using them to deport a record number of illegal immigrants.

I don’t agree with calling women misogynist labels but the #NotMyPresident is pretty childish even if it feels good right now. If you’re an American, then yes, he will be your President. If someone feels *that* strongly about it, they should absolutely renounce their US citizenship.

I saw it shared by an American-Muslim friend who *hated* Clinton.

Obama DID deport a record number of illegal immigrants, though. He just didn’t talk about it.

It’s interesting because I kept saying that Trump would win since early this year and my husband thought I was insane. Like he’d go ranting about how “it’s fucking impossible.” Like the professor guy points out, elections are mostly about trends and cycles and circumstances. Sure, there are personalities, like Obama,

Of course, you are free to cower and tremble if that’s what you wish for the next four years. I was hoping to allay some of your fears with what were harsh words, perhaps, but like you said “only time will tell.” So it seems more reasonable to have a wait-and-watch approach than falling to pieces. I am not a Trump

My personal political opinions and feelings on immigration as a legal immigrant myself has absolutely no bearing on my primary duty as an adult and a teacher: that is to comfort and reassure all four year old students in my classroom that they are loved, safe and protected. That is literally the job of any adult.

Fair enough. That’s what I thought as well. But I am not going to blame white voters for going with whoever they thought was going to look out for them and their interests as well.
