I sometimes worry that today’s kids aren’t exposed to enough dark stuff. It may give you a few nightmares, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It helps you learn to cope with shit. My friend’s kids can’t even watch the end of The Little Mermaid without freaking out, and they’re 8 and 10.

I’ve never understood why it gave so many people nightmares when they were kids. I was fascinated by it, and I saw it for the first time when I was 6 or so. I grew up in the country and was used to seeing animals mutilate each other, so maybe that had something to do with it.

I love Don Bluth movies (Secret of Nimh is one of my favorite cartoons ever), and none of them really bothered me as a kid with the exception of the Cossack Cats in the beginning of An American Tail. Those weren’t cats, those were slavering demons.

Agreed on the bear scene in Fox and the Hound, and I’m not someone who’s easily scared/disturbed by movies (I LOVE Watership Down and Secret of Nimh and saw both at a very young age; for me the darker the cartoon the better).

When I was getting married, my best guy friend (and my husband’s best man) asked if he could come to one of my dress fittings because he was excited to see which dress I’d picked. The hubs and I had a campfire tonight and listened to nothing but Tom Petty. It felt like an appropriate farewell.
