I’ve internalized that not tipping is the equivalent of telling wait staff that they have done a terrible job.

It’s my assumption because even this biased article doesn’t say anything about rent. If he were buying the houses with the intention to rent them to his employees I strongly doubt the author would have omitted that.

The employees living rent-free is your assumption. And even if it’s true, tying someone’s housing to their job is always the wrong move. Show me proof that he bought these houses and gave them freely to his employees, no strings attached.

Tipping should absolutely die because it’s dumb, but waiters and bar staff are NOT getting paid by their employers without tipping.

Not in many states. Where I live servers get about $3 an hour, about enough to cover the taxes on claimed tips.
