I think it has more to do with state to state policy than market share.
In the US, diesel is taxed about 6 cents more per gallon on the federal level (~24 cent/g vs ~18 cents/g) although state averages are about even between gas and diesel. Here's a breakdown of the state by state fuel taxes. Its not the whole story, but part of it. http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/mark…
