How do you make sure the sentencing of poor(er) defendants isn’t affected? You don’t. The sentences of poor defendants absolutely should be affected. Chiang isn’t rich. Chiang isn’t white. And he still got seventy-two days in weekend county jail for beating a woman bloody.
