Oh man! Game of Thrones is an excellent fantasy murder mystery! It’s my favorite book in the series. It’s self contained. offers a lot of intrigue and has great lore. I’d say give it a full go, I’d hope you end up liking it. It’s like Name of the Rose but with monsters and stuff.

I think “worship” is maybe the wrong word, also Dune would disagree entirely, which is basically a fantasy novel set in a sci-fi universe which I keep trying to read and holy shit is it boring as hell.
