@PICKLES_IN_MY_TUNA: The offending piece was removed. there was an apology.
@PICKLES_IN_MY_TUNA: Leave the fucking institution? Good lord. Are you serious? I need to know if you are serious.
@Florence_Lille: True. I even continued to engage after I was called an "idiot" by someone who was ostensibly concerned about offending people.
@Florence_Lille: Sometimes I have a nice strong coffee in the afternoon and feel like engaging in a debate. No biggie.
@Mama Penguino: I didn't start the thread, mama. I responded to it.
@iambu: They passed out "that guy" shirts too.
@Diziet_Sma: Have you read anything I've posted? I have said over and over again how offensive and awful the piece was, and how it deserved to be pulled. You're chomping at the bit for something that isn't there (or here).
@Diziet_Sma: The stupidity was the viewpoint of the article. The stupid person is someone who actually sees women that way.
@AgainWithFeeling: I think he was attempting to satirize the mindset of someone who views "fat chicks" the way he did in the article. It was awful. However, I have no reason to believe that he literally views women in the horrendous way he described. For your argument to hold, that would have to be the case.
@Diziet_Sma: We disagree and you call me an idiot? And yet you think the article was offensive? We've left satire and have walked straight into irony.
@Diziet_Sma: Wrong! Satire can be extremely offensive! That is the line the genre walks. For you not to understand that is half the problem.
@AgainWithFeeling: Satire, if done right, is offensive and funny. This was just offensive. It doesn't mean that was his goal. It just means he is a very bad satirist. And the danger of bad satire is you potentially piss off a lot of people who can't tell the difference.
@Diziet_Sma: You're excellent at not explaining your own apparently very strong beliefs.
@Diziet_Sma: But you are saying that any and all satire about heavy women would not be ok, am I right? I am just trying to clarify your take here.
@Diziet_Sma: So satire is out. I just want to make clear that that is your take.
@Diziet_Sma: I am asking YOUR opinion on the shirt. And you will not address the point? After I asked you straight out? That's an odd stance. Why?
@Diziet_Sma: If Stephen Colbert, the Alpha and the Omega of satire, did a bit about fat chicks (and god help me, I bet I could find something if I looked long enough), would that not be ok?
@Diziet_Sma: 1) Please explain why you still have a problem with the shirt.
@Diziet_Sma: It's poor satire. That is basically the gist of the whole problem. The dumb bastard wasn't clever or funny enough.
The original piece was a poor attempt at Onion style writing, and it obviously blew back in his face. And, you guys caught it, and his article was pulled. Good job.
