If you think that Journalism as a whole is not worth saving because you don’t agree with some of it, you are part of the problem.
Google didn’t drop “Don’t be evil.” When they restructured, Alphabet got it’s own self-optimisitic motto “Do the right thing,” but “Don’t be evil” is still Google’s motto.

It is done through the app. Check the preferences section.
Open the side menu thing by tapping the right hand corner. Tap preferences. On this page, it has options to hide NSFW posts and/or thumbnails, or to blur NSFW thumbnails. The “hide NSFW posts” option is off by default, but the other settings are on by default.
They all DO have methods to filter out the content. According to the developers of a few of these apps, Apple told them that they can’t have a setting to enable NSFW content, and that they need to prevent any NSFW content from getting on to the site. Which is impossible.
