I’m no gammar guru but I believe proper grammar would have had a comma before the first quotation mark and right before the last quotation mark. If it did have that last comma in particular it would have eliminated this confusion lol

Never speak of how reliable a car is lest it hear you and decide it wants to be spiteful. Knock on wood if you slip up and accidentally vocalize that it hasn’t given you any problems! This method has worked for me for many years *knock on wood*.
