To claim that "America was founded on the individual pursuit of happiness" with no critical analysis of what that meant as a concept when America was founded seems to me completely toothless if you're trying to claim this founding value means anything now. It's rhetoric. Mythologizing the founding values is troubling

I don't find it especially productive to rely on this sort of out-of-context rhetoric when discussing American values. These concepts means different things in the late 18th century.

When my parents drove me home from the hospital after I was born, they strapped me into my car seat but didn't realize you also had to strap the seat into the car.

Successful parenting in America = raising a child to become an adult who is a good consumer. So, yeah, independence is not as important as SAT prep classes in kindergarten or whatever they do with kids now.

Decomposition is a natural bodily function too. Not all of them are that pleasant. Natural doesn't always mean good or desirable.

True question - did you mean to direct this comment to someone else? I clearly said that I don't really feel badly for Colonels because their pay is not bad.

I was actually trying to explain to someone today how to tell the difference between a Sargent and a Boldini and I was like, you just...know.

Not that much of it is tax free, at least not that I remember. Not unless you're making hazard pay or something. What else is tax free? Maybe BAH? Lots of junior enlisted servicemembers are, indeed, poor. They barely make ends meet paycheck to paycheck and thank goodness they at least have decent health care.

I sort of feel less badly for the Colonels. By that point in your life and career, you should know how to be a little more responsible, and your pay isn't terrible.

That is exactly how my brother ended up buying a car he wasn't able to actually drive on base because it turned out to have, like, all these illegal upgrades and wouldn't pass inspections.

I remember that landlords would just look up BAH and then charge that regardless of what the apartment was actually worth.

I am not really a beach person either but I LOVED my Caribbean trip I took with my dad years ago. We chartered a boat and sailed around the BVI. I have heard that the BVI is safer than the American islands, but I have no facts to back this up. We flew to Florida, then to Tortola, where we picked up the boat from

I'm not going to lie, the weather sucks like, most of the time. Humidity, hurricanes, ice storms. But other than that, DC is pretty awesome. I think that there's enough going on that you should be able to find your kind of people and cool stuff to do.

The UA ad is a special kind of bullcrap, because that stupid voice-over is not even about Misty Copeland and it implicitly blames you for not working hard enough or having a strong enough "will" when you cannot, like, change the anatomical structure of your pelvis or something like that. It's not empowering, it's the

I would say those can also be places you should not bring kids. Some cats are social and are part of the family. My cat loves getting attention when we go out. I don't think your friend is using good sense, but our cat goes places that are generally pet friendly, such as outdoor seating areas at cafés, or places she

My cat is my baby. If you disagree, please enjoy this middle finger and never step foot inside my house.

What news do you think you are delivering, here? I'm saying that I do not think ideas of body dysmorphia adequately describe or understand it because they are too focused on external things and ignore the phenomenology of the issue for the person suffering. So you've simply reiterated the very things I'm saying are

I feel like this idea if body dysmorphia is extremely superficial and does not at all take into account the very real and distressing phenomenological experience of your body not being right. It is not just about how it looks. It's about how it feels. It feels wrong. "Why can't it be removed?" Is a question many ED

I do notice that there is significant overlap between people who are into working out and people who fetishize busyness, but I feel like bragging about not having time to read is a problem with the latter rather than the former. Of course, I don't know your friends, so this is just an abstract musing.
