I think people do NOT get that damages are not just about making the person whole.

Perhaps. But there are several known cases where “it had to be a family member” and they were later proven to be done by an outsider.

That’s assuming the DNA was semen and not blood or urine.

How many criminals do you know? How many interrogations have you sat in on?

Possibly. But as a lawyer, I would never, ever convict anyone in the family based on the shoddy, biased investigation.
