As a white woman with kinky/curly hair, I can verify that people do not randomly come up to me and touch it. I get comments all the time, but no intrusive hands, despite having hair that’s similar to that of some black or biracial women.

I think it was Parable of the Sower that I read. I thought her ideas were great, it was just the flow of the writing & the personality of the characters I couldn’t get into (again, not a problem with the writing, I’m just picky and sometimes don’t enjoy certain authors). I might try a different series.

Love this list. Looking forward to reading most of the sci-fi books. I couldn’t really get into Octavia Butler - I wish I did, she’s a genius, but I’m irrationally picky about fiction. (It’s not her, it’s me.) So I’m glad to see other Afrofuturist recommendations I can try. 

I think it would be hard for anyone to pull off a full-scale massacre like Black Wall Street in today’s age of cellphone cameras & social media. OTOH, a couple of “random” arson attacks could cause plenty of damage. I hope he can get good insurance.
