As a white person I want to be really clear that I am not defending these folks or excusing them. But in my experience, many of them really, truly, believe that their opinions are unrelated to racism and that they’re not promoting bigotry at all.

Part of the problem is that the right-wing pundits who are smart enough to know better are intentionally pushing a false narrative about a protest “against the flag” or “against the military,” and a whole lot of dumb white people are willing to buy into it wholesale.
