I’m going to say “cotton centerpieces when your guests are black” is not a case where ignorance is an option. AT BEST, someone on his staff is the racist asshole who put the centerpieces out and he didn’t notice them. But that’s still pretty ignorant. A guy his age? He should know better.

I too am also white and often argue about the vast cluelessness of white people on racial topics.

I’ve gotten the impression that black people tend to put more effort into making serious homemade mac & cheese and they serve it as a side dish for real meals, whereas for white people it’s the stuff in the blue box that you fix for your kids’ lunch when you’re in a hurry, or that college kids eat when they’re not…
