Where I live BLM meetings are generally open, at least within the activist community. It’s not like they’re a secret underground group.

That’s sort of the problem with the show. Portladia’s premise is mockery of Portland. Sometimes it does it well or the jibing is well-deserved. Sometimes their taunts are insightful. But all of them are jokes at the expense of people who have much less power than the producers of the show. So even at it’s funniest

Agreed. If people actually READ the statement the bookstore put out, it’s totally fucking reasonable and something I’d think most people here would agree with. Jez cherry-picked some hot takes without context and put a shitty mocking tang on the whole thing (and most of the comments reflect that attitude). Like, the

It’s in the article above.

That’s fair, and I agree that there’s probably a certain amount of self-parody, but at the same time there is a lot of window-dressing on that particular bit that can be, well, less good. Part of it is Fred Armisen in drag, which as a “joke” falls very flat.

Just a guess, but probably not the independent bookstore that said they lost money agreeing to being used as a set (for a skit that pretty much just straight-up mocks the owners of the store)...?

Ok, but Portlandia is transmisogynistic, 100% white, glorifies the gentrification problem in Portland, and is generally very antagonistic of queer and feminist issues-- and not even for the sake of humor, the show has been floating on the same jokes since episode 1. Also, the Willamette Week is a rape apologist paper

Like, I can see the inherent humor in it, but then again shouldn’t we be a bit concerned that Portlandia has created an environment where sincere-if overbearing-feminism is treated as a joke? I know, there are folks who take it too far, but at the same time as another poster mentioned, good humor punches up, and I

I think they were upset tha the BLM sign was removed so it wouldn’t be seen on the show. They also state BLM Portland also meets there regularly, and are also reminding people of the historic racism of the Oregon and Portland in particular. Oregon was formed to be a “white utopia”

i mean they arent wrong that the show is like 100% white

I know it’s a story where the punchline writes itself, but I hope people will also remember that good humor punches up, not down.

Fred Armisen is a misognystic asshole who I wish would go away forever. And the fact that he is so closely associated with my once fine city is a thorn in my side.

He’s got property on the south pole and he can tell you, the ice is definitely not melting. It’s really a lovely place. It’s making lots of money. Lots. Sniff.

Lol. His “own little speech” opposing it? The one I linked above? You are such a waste of time.

Now playing

I’m so tired of this lie. 1/3rd of the congressional black caucus and Senator Bernie Sanders were opposed to the “tough on crime” provision of the Crime Bill. That it hurt black communities was not a complete revelation 20 years later. Savy people who resisted the powerful political influence of the Clinton’s knew

The problem with centrists and their compromises is, as the crime bill& their compromise on DADT proves, sometimes you end up ruining millions of lives for no good reason.

I did say “if she governs like her husband” elsewhere in the comments and as for Bill Clinton....

“our girl” Loooool. ahah, oh god, Americans and their cultural blindness. Always so fun.
