The Biggest Loser is such an awful show. Regardless of the implications for the science of weight loss, these results show that it’s not a good idea to strain your body like this, and the fact that people are profiting off of these folks’ pain is gross.

Of course the type of weight loss depicted on that show is NOT healthy. To maintain weight loss, you need a total change of lifestyle and eating habits but you also have to do it progressively. And it has to be sustainable. That show makes a humiliating freak show out of these poor people and of course they’re going

There’s new show where fitness professional gain weight and then take it off, so that they can “come from a place of understanding”. I’d be very curious to see if their metabolism resets.

As a TA, I hear these kind of statements from my students a lot, but I don’t see it as a big deal. They’re just using “I feel” as a replacement for “I think.” And despite what Worthan argues, it’s not impossible to correct or build upon these statements. If I can do it with less than a year of teaching experience

A lot of my job involves working with women post-mastectomy. I don’t judge women who get reconstructed, I can’t imagine how losing a breast would feel. But many have told me that, had they known the hassle and pain of reconstruction, they would have skipped it altogether. Should my turn with mastectomy ever come, I’d

Breast reconstructions—whether TRAM or DIEP flaps or expanders followed by an implant, have HUGE failure and surgical site infection rates, and the docs know that. It’s the nature of the surgery; flaps of any kind are always touch and go, as are any surgical implants. The surgical oncologists at my facility always

My mom didn’t have reconstruction surgery either. She didn’t even ask. She just didn’t feel like her femininity or worth was tied to her boobs. She has never criticized the decision of other cancer survivors to get reconstruction surgery. She is just happy the way she is and supportive of the rights of others to do

I was diagnosed at 29 with a tumor large enough that mastectomy was the only option. It’s important for people to know that the razzle-dazzle surgical reconstructions that sometimes are out there in the media (a la Angelina) are most often for people who didn’t have cancer at all (preventative) or didn’t have the full

After ten plus years of my mom having gone through breast cancer and losing one as well, I wonder why she didn’t get plastic surgery. This article helped my unanswered questions very much so! This woman is very enlightening and honest. Thank you.

When men tell me to smile, I say I have a zygomatic disorder that prevents upward curvature of the mouth and THANKS FOR MOCKING MY DISABILITY. Real sensitive, dick.

FIRST REPORTED INCIDENT OF A MAN TELLING A WOMAN *NOT* TO SMILE?!?

Bwahaha. I thought the same thing, but I’ve been digging Yoko’s tweets lately. Now that she’s (literally) dropped all her peas.

Sounds more like Yoko Ono hacked his account.

Really?! I was always under the impression that the CDC was pretty unbiased as far as advancing political agendas goes. But my field isn’t medical science so I’m no expert. I would love to know more.

I blame video games/internet/technology. When you spend the majority of your time NOT with actual physical humans, it is harder to get your freak on. Not to mention that porn has never been more accessible. Why risk pregnancy or STDs when you can conveniently wank to porn stars, cam girls, or your significant other

From the CDC report:

The idea of bodily autonomy for women is therefore such a “new concept” that even several waves of laws passed over the last century still have major gaps like this, since clueless lawmakers were still focused on the stranger assaulting someone in the dark kind of rape or the idea of vaginal or anal rape as the only

Rapists in high places shape the law.

Yeah, it’s a very depressing reminder of how much sexual assault is a “modern” crime. We have literally centuries of case law about what is a regular assault or a regular battery, going back to the earliest recorded cases in the 13th century. But the idea that touching a woman’s body sexually was a distinct crime is
