CBS does love their celebrity walk-ons. Dave did them a lot in the 90s and 00s, mostly to some promotional effect. That said, it was worth it with the whole Cowhers bit. Funny to see the old doors of the Ed Sullivan theater being put to good use again, an integral part of the set.

Spot on. It is interesting to watch Colbert do these types of bits because the "character" Colbert would have done that bit full throttle, but straight-man Colbert eases off the gas just enough to cut it. That is what I saw in that bit last night and he really hit it out of the park.
