@Josh: There was a crash mode, it was just a bit shit. You had to hit a button when you crashed to go into the crash mode.

There was a method being developed a few years ago which enabled real 3d style holograms, ala star wars. It was effectively creating tiny little explosions in the air to create points of light. I can't find the article now, of course. :(
