Having done this farm for about 20 times now, the loading is really a bit shorter than the run back. I think it has to do with staying in the same area that the load is fairly short.

Confirmed. I head-shotted a cronie by accident. Left the other three (so including the Boss) live and let myself get killed. Same result; all four were present again.
