I have a 1999 Corolla with the non-VVTi engine, and it's pretty much unstoppable too. Sure, it might be burning oil, but it's still strong after 221,000+ miles. Mine isn't a smokestack one, though, like most of them are.

I agree with this. In the 2000's the Honda b16 and 18's got a lot of love but the 1.8 in the celica gts was a screamer as well and had a little more power. Also lotus Elise FTW.
Was gonna say the same thing. I've been driving one since 2005. Thankfully, mine didn't suffer the dreaded precat failure that many of the first two years' MR2s had. Burns a little oil, but otherwise completely trouble-free for over 8 years.
Mine was also a 2001 Chevy Prizm, I'm just so used to describing it as a Geo Prizm or a Corolla for the non-car people.
The 2ZZ variant is also incredible and under-appreciated. It has all of the reliability and fuel economy of the 1ZZ, but beefed up and able to rev past 8,000 RPMs. It's not terribly powerful, nor does it respond to mods very well, but it's still a great motor.
I have one in my matrix with a manual, its nice but I wish I had a turbo or the 2ZZ.
I have the 1.6 in my Scion XB and I can attest that it's an amazingly bulletproof engine, with the exception of the AC compressor (had to replace twice)
A friend of mine drove 200,000 miles on one before changing the oil (no clue why). It was impossible to kill. The car died a rusty death. Nothing to do with the engine.
Here you go! Video > Image anyway.
Woah - looks like I just got approved commenter status! Nvrmnd... I'll buy BUNCHES of shirts!!!
Sorry to be an old man, but is there an option without the text? I'd love to be able to get the shirt with just the art w/ the Jalopnik logo. (This is a sincere question from a loyal commenter who will buy several without the text, but none with it). Thanks :)
I agree if you race headphones area a must have.
Style wise, you are always going to have people that will love a vehicle for how it looks despite its flaws...
Uh, guys? I have the best answer ever.
They are advertised as performance street cars, not race cars.
As a former Type 14 owner, I agree, but with a caveat: It must be RWD.
It was a beautiful little car: cute, sporty and sexy . . . LOOKING. Granted, it sucked as a driver's car, but reborn with modern performance and handling, it could be VW's answer to the Miata. Or the Toyobaru.
