THIS, this is what bothers me. I can hear the pitch meeting for this movie in my head, and it's not "There's a lot of talk about privacy and government and corporate surveillance going on at the moment, I think times good for an adaptation of 1984!", it's "Balls! We're running out of YA dystopia novels to film,

It was a live broadcast, performed like a play with live editing. It was pretty common in the very early days of television (and not just one off dramas like this, there were ongoing series that were all live performances, like Z Cars)

Which I haven't seen and which, if true, is a completely lame cop out.

GOOD GOD

You are a scholar and a gentleperson. No umbrage was taken and we shall proceed as though this mishap never took form or, as my fine and Ivy League educated cousin would exclaim:

I agree with your OP, suggesting a real 1984 movie would serve as a preventative measure or cautionary tale.

But the intellegentsia and academics are neither silenced nor cowed. It's just that the pablum-pushers have a bigger megaphone than we mere mortals. While we're at it, let's turn other dystopian novels into romantic movies! How about Brave New World? The chick is happy in her materialistic society that she's been conditioned to love, but then the hot guy from the reservation opens her eyes and she goes to live with him away from the oppressive society, and they

Meryl Streep can.

Maybe they tried to get her (they ended up getting her boyfriend, so ...) and she had the decency of say no.

War is Peace, Hate is Love, Derp is Pathos.

...in an actual 1984 dystopia, turning on the news would be the last thing to do in order to observe the 1984ness of it all.
