Agree 100%. Using beta software on a computer or mobile device is fine - it won’t kill you. Using experimental stuff on a 4,000-5,000 speed machine? That’s just reckless as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve been in one accident(rollover) in my life. I can remember the exact song that was playing. “What it’s like” by Everlast. Doesn’t surprise me he heard the audiobook and remembers it. I also remember watching my sunglasses float like they were in zero gravity. Odd stuff
That’s what im saying. Still looking for proof. There are a lot of dropouts that claim they were seals, etc etc.
Lol. Saved!
You should have posted something portrait just to torture the COTD winner.
It’s a shame that this happened. My sympathies to the victim and his family. However, I bet anything that being as well-verse as this guy was in electronics, he knew about the several tricks that are available to trick the Tesla’s system into thinking the driver’s hands are the wheel, may even have developed his own.…
The great irony is that they’re putting side skirts on for fuel mileage anyway. The increased cost would be marginal.
Something similar happened before though. Iirc a Tesla hit the front of a parked semi trailer because the object was too high and the sensors didn’t see it. Apparently Tesla is going to have to sadd a high mount radar/lidar sensor.
Cruise control has already proven itself and people know how to use it. There is a big reason why car makers go though years and years of testing a tech to see if it fits. Same reason why premium car manufacturers are not racing to give autonomous tech. Tesla is not testing it the same way.
Guards were “recommended”by the NHTSA for the rear of trailers after actress Jayne Mansfield was killed when the car she was in ran into the back of one in 1967. Her Wikipedia entry says the trucking industry was “slow to adopt” them. I would imagine the industry has also fought side guards on grounds of cost. On a…
I mean the autopilot obviously failed in the sense that it didn’t see a fucking truck. As designed, the driver is supposed to take over in that situation, and ultimately the fault rests with him, but I don’t think you can consider not seeing and avoiding a 12' high object in the middle of the road a non-failure.
The idea of "beta testing" is something that the vast majority of the population doesn't actually understand since they aren't involved in software testing. Couple that with the fact that consumer products are only rarely released with beta features and it's pretty clear how something like this would happen.
Although that is impressive that they have beaten the average, this wreck smells like a driver using the system in the wrong way. I don’t blame Tesla as they have done all the legal stuff to tell drivers “DON’T BE STUPID!” But people like to play stupid games, eventually they win stupid prizes. This will most likely…
I am starting to really understand what that Volvo engineer meant when he said that Level 3 autonomous cars are fundamentally dangerous.
I’m sure they’ll take a much bigger hit if it turns out the autopilot failed.
Porsche Panamera has the same exact level 3 autonomous functions as Tesla. Because they have a self preservation instinct, they don’t market it as a self driving car with autopilot. I love Tesla and I have a Model 3 deposit, but their arrogance here is staggering and it’s going to change the reality of self driving…
How loose is your head?
The deflection and defensiveness starts in the first paragraph. TOO SOON! Those are good data points, but don't lead with them.
