Aerogels weren’t invented specifically for space exploration, but are used extensively for it. Basically a foam or gel where the liquid portion has been replaced with gas, makes for ultra light insulation.

I agree with everything you state - the first two seasons were pretty bad (season one moreso because the cast was in that awkward chemistry phase). I think it really hit its stride when 7 showed up for the same reasons, but as a character, I did not like 7.
call me heretic, but I love Voyager more than any of the other Star Treks. Yeah, I said it. Sure, it had a bad season, but once it started going...
I always thought Voyager was a little front-heavy for that landing gear configuration... Those nacelles must have some serious mass to them.
