I think it's (a) that they are anticipating a punchline that never comes; (b) people are mean and enjoy laughing at cruelty to fat people, especially fat women; and (c) some of it could have been uncomfortable laughter.

It was part of explaining to this asshole that she is a person, that she has suffered adversity, and that his reducing her to her missing arm and weight ignores all of that. And, really, until you've been attacked in this way, I don't think you're in a place to judge how she reacts.

I tried to post a question about this on their FB page, and they aren't permitting posts. I have a feeling they are doing the same with their Twitter account.
