Test flights usually leave the landing gears down. In case of emergency, they can try and land the plane rather than smash it into the ground.

Regardless of the topic of his paper, I would not believe a 'scientist' who quoted wikipedia as one of their references*. I quite don't understand how PLoS accepted the paper.
