This is a huge terminology issue. I am in favor of “animal welfare” but not “animal rights.” Basically, in its extreme, “animal rights” in its most extreme forms is more like considering them as equal to humans in terms of the law, and eliminates pet ownership. “Animal welfare” is about treating them humanely.

Some additional advice: volunteer. Figure out some direction that makes you excited, and volunteer in that area. See how you like it. This will both help your career prospects (instead of a big blank on the resume, you will have something worthwhile) and help your state of mind!

Just to be particularly annoying - most Ph.D. programs don’t have you “spending your parents’ money” but rather pay YOU to attend, since you are teaching and producing research for the university.
