I don't think Roland's skin color matters to the plot at all, outside of the Detta issue mentioned in the article, but man, no one would ever describe Idris Elba as 'ugly', would they?

The tone, style, and pacing of the second book is entirely different from the Gunslinger. The opening chapter is actually one of the ballsiest moves of King's career, really. 15 year old me, who also found the Gunslinger a bit slow, found himself thinking 'holy shit, where is this going?'.

Honestly, I can't think of any pre-release speculation I saw, even the most optimistic, that was anything close to 'Deadpool will make half a billion dollars in two weeks'.
