I dunno, I always detected a note of sad self-deprecation in "please clap." You could tell he was ready to throw in the towel. Trump, on the other hand, doesn't have a self-deprecating bone in his body, and as such this is sickeningly/hilariously irony-free.

Yeah, I guess the use of quotes could potentially be confusing - when I do it, I mean to undercut the attempt to put an intellectual gloss on bigotry, not to suggest that these people don't exist in disquieting numbers and have a toxic effect on the discourse.
