When I was five years old we lived in Florissant, Missouri, very small town about 16 miles NW of St. Louis. My mother would give me a dollar, and a note and I would walk about three blocks (no street crossing) to the A&P and hand the cashier the note and they would get me a loaf of bread and I paid them and came home.
