Correct. For all those “he did the time” apologists - legally, he did the time. But “doing the time” doesn’t mean making amends. You make amends to all the people you hurt, not just the direct victim. In the case of the celebrity, it’s everyone who’s ever backed you, who ever invested in you, who ever trusted you.

SOME people can’t grasp the concept of “Impact over intent” because historically their “intent” (and fair skin) has protected them from repercussion. Someone let them know, those days end NOW.

They know exactly what they are doing and consider it part of their “white privilege” to act racist and get away with it.

yup, this. for me it was never physical, but it took me years to even realize i was abused.

I can understand the struggle for some to understand how someone they know in one way could possibly behave in another way. Surely we’ve all been there in one way or another with our friends and family.

It’s never the woman you know either. It’s never the opinionated, happy-seeming, confident woman being abused. It’s never the happy mother, the dedicated wife, the accomplished physician. That woman would never be abused. She would stop it. She would not put up with that kind of thing. Her upbringing didn’t

She was painted as the biggest of gold diggers for years. Rappers used to make fun of her in their songs. Mike used to tell a “joke” about the best punch he ever threw, was one that sent Robin bouncing off of every wall in the room. It’s amazing that she got so much shit while Mike became beloved. Even after the rape

Foodstamps are because you don’t have money and help a lot of decent people out, so go fuck yourself.

The whole point of 'food stamps' being 'stamps' is that it's not money, you racist dipshit.

Exactly what is food stamp money?  You’ve shaded yourself into darkness with your ignorance.

You’re right. I’m sure he did that Nike campaign gratis.
(And by the way, don’t worry: You don’t sound racist at all.)

why do i want to think that this was intended to show that the kkk is awful and wanted to suppress voters, but it went horribly awry?

but then that doesnt the least bit explain the well made even for a school project kkk outfit. i mean, i would have atleast super half assed that portion of the job and told the teacher

Prevailing sadness is my overriding emotion. I wouldn’t say it ‘hurt my feelings’ because that would imply that a dumb kid in a place I’ve never heard of thought it would be funny or a good idea to dress up as a hateful racist/terrorist.

When will people learn that racism doesn’t require intention? That lets like 90% of racists off the hook (which is the point, I know) since they almost never consider their actions racist, no matter how clearly racist they are, and therefore can’t intend those actions to be racist

Funny thing: the teacher is obviously a clueless idiot who failed to bring his student's racist, attention seeking-asshat-ish behavior to a screeching halt. But if a black kid wears a BLM tee or refuses to stand for the anthem all hell breaks loose. Ok.

Him and Conor Friedsdorf are like the kings of the “liberal” thought, the “actually, maybe it’s not racism/sexism” and “you guys are protesting the wrong way” crowd.

I wonder why Jon Chait didn’t get that same sense of welcoming from his women friends.

I love reading these stories! I also really enjoy hearing stories about how women get by, considering how much harder it is to make ends meet than it was for our parents and grandparents.

I’m envious of her for only having 85k in debt. Presumably that was secured, etc, so she could declare bankruptcy if she had to, and be done with it. She’d lose her house, but at least could start clean. I’m staring up over 300k of debt, mostly student loans, which I will likely still have when I die, and no way of
