In the show, the main character unintentionally mocks the director of the film he's in because he thought he acknowledge how bad everything was when he said "[I'm not directing] no Casablanca." The director literally meant they were not making that film.

This reminds me when John Darnielle of "The Mountain Goats" just straight-up said that he doesn't understand why anyone thinks his rugged, unpolished work is superior. He objectively believes the final, purified product is the best.
