They are. Maybe not in the United States of Lazy, but in Europe they are. And over here in the Netherlands, if you pass your exam in an automatic car, you're not allowed to drive stick. If your pass your exam while driving stick, you're allowed to drive both.

Sure, it uses a ball joint, but that doesn't make the design spherical. Humans also have these kinds of joints (shoulders, hips) and I wouldn't call myself spherical.
