You can’t really force someone to play football. Any player in any sport can choose not to play under his contract. He just doesn’t get payed then and he gets a year older, which is worse in Football than any other sport.

IIRC if he plays the season on the tag, they can slap him with the tag again next season. If he sits out the whole year, they can only give him the “non-exclusive” tag and he can (and will) get big money form somewhere else. So it’s either big contract or he sits out.
