Learning new programming languages isn't nearly as hard as spoken languages.
Preference is a part of it, but a lot of it has to do with the requirements for what you're doing. For example, android apps are written in java, while ios is objective-c and a desktop application might be c++. Coding in a higher level

pretty much, some are easier to understand, some are for scripting, some are for hard coding,
some are better for small projects, some are better for big projects, some compile/runs faster, etc...
