I think it is perfectly reasonable to use rewards to encourage players to explore aspects of a game they might not otherwise. I would almost say it's essential in a game as big as Inquisition.
Achievements can ruin the mood for some scenes, but it can complement others. I really liked it when the beginning portion of Assassin's Creed III had a pretty significant plot twist which was followed by the achievement "How dya like them apples?"
