Oh he can definitely do gentle and contemplative too. Episode 9 of his first series Kemonozume is amazing in how peaceful it is compared to what's come before it in the series.

Exactly, it's not that it's bad or anything… Just somewhat repetitive, low-budget and not quite as witty as one might think as an 8-year-old.

I assume this was a joke anyway, but they seem to have a pretty good relationship. My friend worked on Nebraska and said Laura actually came to visit her dad on the set and since she was there, she did an uncredited cameo as one of the patrons in the bar.
