Mk1 GTI’s are always nice to see. However, I am certainly sick of seeing hacked and haggard “swaps” whenever I come across any pre-1993 VW’s. That fact alone makes this GTI much less special - probably could get closer to the $8500 if it was stock and unmolested. At least they didn’t Plasti-Dip anything yet.

While Wolfsburg editions are easy to fake, the package never had anything at all to do with powertrain choice. Wolfsburgs were just superficial add ons, although you could get the package on both 8 and 16v cars depending on year. This seller may be disingenuous, but there are plenty of 8v Wolfsburg’s out there.

I dunno, I am quite skeptical of almost anything reported by consumers to JD Power - mostly because of the *consumer*. I always envision some 'boomer driving their 2012 PRY-us to the dealership because it seems "low on power," or "doesn't accelerate right away," or something benign like that.
