My two cents here : they are adapating Jean-Paul Sartre's famous play : "No Exit", where 3 people end up in Hell (consisting of a mere hotel room, just a bit too hot), and they are stuck there so they can torture each other, for eternity.
The difference of course is that they know where they are, and they can't help
