The “it needs more range” complaint is just like “it needs more horsepower” or “it needs more cargo space” or “it needs more ground clearance”. Knee-jerk reactions that don’t really reflect actual needs in most cases. People keep thinking that they need to be able to solve every worst-case scenario with one vehicle.
I worked the same job non-union, and then union. I’ll never go back to non-union. Better pay, better benefits, better protections, ability to easily move to other shops if I want, etc etc.
