This was a great show, if memory serves - I think it has a pretty great reputation for those who know about it. I was always a Tour of Duty kid - the less subtle, more "dudes in war can have feelings, man" show that ran almost contemporaneously.

I stumbled across a documentary a while ago about David Secter, a filmmaker who then went on to be connected to New Line and Troma, of all things, I think.
His earlier work "Winter Kept Us Warm" sounds like it's worth mentioning here. (Haven't had the chance to see, myself.)
