I turn off the AC when switching to defrost because I care more about getting maximum heat.

My current car (08 Nissan Versa) is the first car I’ve owned, or driven, that runs the AC automatically when I turn the dial to defrost.

He mentions red and black wires, so it would be a 3 wire cable (4 incl. the ground).

The 240v breaker/cable combo he is using should be fine, as a proper 3 wire cable will have a ground wire included (it will contain red, black, white, and bare [or green] wires). Sharing a neutral between two phases is normal (one set of plugs gets red & white, second set gets black & white, both get the bare ground).…

Running a 3 wire cabke to power the garage receptacles is totally fine. You mentioned a 4 wire... does that include a ground wire? Because a 3 wire cable has a fourth wire for ground included. A 4 wire cable (two hot, one neutral, one ground) is only specified when dealing with extension cord style cables.
