Sorry, I should have mentioned i'm in the U.S. We have the option of speaking to a solicitor before claiming innocence. This often results in the charge being reduced. Most municipalities are after the money so they have no issue reducing the points and taking the cash.

This is true. I do always suggest showing up and speaking to the solicitor. The ticket usually will be reduced if you ask. NEVER just pay the ticket online.
